Internet Explorer 5 includes a feature that webmasters can take advantage of in order to make their web site look more attractive when added to a user's Favorites menu. It is the favicon.ico file that you load to your server in the root directory where your main index.html file resides.

The favicon.ico comes into play when a visitor using IE5 adds your site to their Favorites menu. The favicon.ico file must adhere to exact specifications in order to work.

When the user adds any page from your domain to his or her Favorites list (Bookmarks), your icon will appear next to the link - in both the Favorites menu and the URL locator. This helps to identify your web site at a glance.
